Eddie Ryon Makuahania Aikau or simply known as “Eddie” was a beloved Hawaiian surfer and became the first official lifeguard at Waimea Bay. He embraced the ocean with a deep passion, riding towering waves with grace and fearlessness. As a lifeguard Eddie saved over 500 lives and his dedication earned him the enduring nickname "Eddie Would Go," symbolizing his unwavering commitment and fearless spirit to save others even in the most treacherous conditions. His legacy is one of bravery and sacrifice, as he made the ultimate sacrifice in an attempt to help those in need. Eddie tragically lost his life at sea in 1978 - he was trying to paddle back to land on his surfboard to find help for a stranded crew. He was only 31 years old at the time of his death. Eddie Aikau was much more than a surfing legend; he was a symbol of bravery, courage and the true spirit of aloha.
